Largest N. American Woodpecker

This female Pileated Woodpecker was seen at Stony Creek Metropark.

Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest North American woodpecker with an average length of 16.5 inches (42cm), about the size of a crow. Their loud call and very loud drumming are distinctive and unmistakable.

The male is similar in appearance, but his red crest extends farther on his forehead to the bill, and he has a red "mustache."

A bird this big, flashy and noisy should be easy to find, but they are very wary, and they will fiy off when approached. Their favorite food is black ants found in decaying wood.
