Walking Among Phragmites

Phagmites are the tall reeds on either side of the trail. They are an invasive species found in marshes, lakeshores, roadside ditches, and seemingly anywhere water can be found. It has become the dominant species in many areas of southeast Michigan. It has been cut, poisoned, plowed under, and burned, yet it still spreads.

Another interesting thing in the picture is the green grass on the edges of the trail. This picture was taken in December, but today (January 4) my lawn is still green. That has never happened before!
