My "Scandinavian Vacation"

High on my "bucket list" is a vacation in the Scandinavian countries. For now, my wife and I were happy to spend our 46th Anniversary at "Nestledown", a Scandinavian-themed bed-and-breakfast in Marquette, Michigan

Our genial Finnish and Norwegian hosts built this unique inn themselves, from the bottom up, using traditional materials. Ken mixed his own "red paint", using linseed oil, water, flour, and iron oxide, matching a "Falun Red" that might be found in Sweden. Rough-sawn cedar painted red, and white trim on the exterior; linseed oil-waxed hardwood floors and sauna on the interior; and simple breakfasts from Finnish and Norwegian recipes complemented the Scandinavian "vacation" theme.

Note: There are many people in Michigan's Upper Peninsula with Scandinavian ethnic roots among others, descendants of immigrants attracted by the need for copper and iron miners in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
