"YOU STINK"
When visiting a zoo, certain things are taken for granted...animals are in a closed environment where they eat, sleep, play, mate and defecate. There are certain smells that go with the territory. But Aardvarks STINK!! And I'm sure that the feeling was mutual haha.
Though they were active, digging tunnels with their powerful claws, snorting, walking and searching, looking at the humans...no one stayed very long to observe them. A unique, strong disagreeable odor secreted from an a specialized anal gland kept the humans away...
In their natural African environment they eat ants and termites almost exclusively, but they are not related to South American anteaters. Their common traits are an example of convergent evolution.
