Black and White in Full Color

This Southern White Rhinoceros is actually a grayish color, and in this living area of the Detroit Zoo, he nearly blends in with the gray rock in this full-color photo.

Rhinos are herbivores of African grasslands, but the only remaining grass in this enclosure are a few tufts of green, as in this picture at the base of the gray rock. So the zoo must provide large quantities of plant material daily to feed this rhinoceros.

Rhinos live about 34 years and can weigh up to 6000 pounds. Surprisingly, their horns are not bone, but are composed of keratin (like hair and nails).
