"STAY BACK!!"

One from the vaults.

It was a very windy day in NYC, and Wall St. was closed to all traffic. NYPD and NYFD had the streets blocked as a high crane operator meticulously worked his load to the roof of a skyscraper.

The bronze statue of George Washington appears to hold back pedestrians, protecting them from the dangers above. The seemingly inverted flag, symbol of distress, is an illusion created by the strong wind that twisted the flag around.

The statue graces the steps of Federal Hall, built in 1842 as the US Customs House. Federal Hall replaced the original building, which housed the First Continental Congress, and the 1884 statue marks the spot where George Washington was inaugurated as the first US President in 1789.
