Cardinal Flower
Cardinal Flowers (Lobelia cardinalis) are a spectacular native wildflower of Michigan, Their brilliant red flowers are relatively small (1.5 in, 4cm), but are profuse on a tall spike (about 2 ft, 60cm).
Because they attract hummingbirds, I planted some Cardinal Flowers in my yard this year. Pollination is accomplished in Cardinal Flowers when hummingbirds search for nectar by inserting their long beaks into the narrow tubular flowers.
