This beautiful equestrian statue of Joan of Arc (Jeanne d'Arc), sword raised high, protects the Basilica of Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) in Montmarte. It is one of a pair, the other being of Louis IX, of bronze sculptures by Hippolyte Lefebvre in 1927,
There are numerous monuments throughout France (and throughout the world) to Joan of Arc, seen as an inspirational figure. Dozens of movies, hundreds of books and articles and paintings commemorate her spirit and heroic actions in the 15th century. She was burned at the stake at the age of 19 in 1431.
