Autumn aspen road
View down the wonderfully scenic State Highway 133, alongside the Crystal River, about 7,000 feet up in the Rocky Mountains of west-central Colorado, at the height of the fall color.
Part of my epic drive this past autumn, the Colorado portion of which took me from Durango up through the San Juan mountains on route 550 through Silverton, Ouray, and Ridgway to Delta. Then east along route 133 to Carbondale, and from there up to Aspen at sunset, and then over the 12,096' (3,687 m) Independence Pass at dusk. Every mile of this route was absolutely stunning, with the trees seeming to be literally on fire. The question was not finding a good place to stop and shoot, but rather deciding where NOT to stop and shoot in order to see everything in the time available. I have never seen so many people with so many dropped jaws and looks of wonder as on this route -- and many of them were clearly experienced photographers.
