Sturtevant Falls in Late October

One of the most beautiful spots in the San Gabriel Mountains, this lush, riparian ecosystem is a mere twenty miles from downtown Los Angeles, but seems worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the LA area's 18 million people. It is at the bottom of a canyon filled with maples, sycamores, and bigcone douglas firs, providing a dense, shady canopy for ferns, ivy, and all kinds of thriving undergrowth.

I took this shot in late October, at the tail end of the dry season in one of the driest years in a long time. This is about as small as the falls get. In comparison, many of the iconic waterfalls in Northern California's Yosemite National Park were actually dry at this point, but Sturtevant Falls (55 feet) just keeps on going.

Happy Waterfall Wednesday everyone! I'm trying to find time to work my way back on to Flickr in the midst of some major life changes, so I hope you'll be patient as I gradually get back into the swing of things and get to all of your great work. Thanks for your time and your continued support.
