Yosemite – off the beaten path
One thing that always amazes me about Yosemite is the color palette. The bluest skies, the greenest greens, and all of that bright granite. I've been coming up here every year of my life, and it never, ever gets old.
This shot is of Wawona Dome & the South Fork of the Merced River, seen from one of my favorite swimming holes in a spot the locals love but few tourists ever get to see. Last winter was mild, so this is a really low water year -- these are great swimming conditions, but they're more typical of mid-August, not mid-July.
Wawona Dome (6,901 feet) is a glacier-carved granite monolith that looms about 3,000 feet above the forested valley floor below it. One of Yosemite's many traditional climbing challenges, it is also home to a recovering population of peregrine falcons, who build nests all along its sheer rock face.
One shot JPEG, hand-held Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera, with M.Zuiko 12-50mm lens, 12mm focal length (24mm FF equivalent), ISO 320, 1/80-sec, f/9, -0.30 exp bias, with a Hoya circular polarizing filter.
