Bucolic Bacharach
The small town of Bacharach am Rhein, on the vineyard-lined stretch of the river just northwest of Bingen, dates back at least to the eleventh century. Despite its small size (just 1868 residents as of 2018), Bacharach has figured prominently in the history of the region, changing hands over the years between leaders of the Counts Palatine, the Bavarian Wittlesbachs, and the Prussian Hohenzollerns, as well as seeing repeated military occupations and sackings in the Thirty Years' War, later by the armies of Louis XIV, and again in the French Revolutionary Wars.
