Sahalie Green

One of the jewels of the central Oregon Cascades, Sahalie Falls is one of several waterfalls along the upper reaches of the McKenzie River. You might recognize it from the Disney movie "Homeward Bound." Here the river drops 73 feet (22.25 meters), with an average volume of 600.0 cu ft/sec. The name "Sahalie" comes from a Chinook jargon word meaning "high", and while not anywhere near one of the highest waterfalls in Oregon, it is always one of the more powerful ones. Even though the McKenzie River originates in Clear Lake, just a few miles upstream, the river sustains a very significant volume all year long thanks to the large drainage area to the northeast which consists largely of plains of lava flows. Water doesn't linger on the surface and seeps underground, forming one of the larger aquifers in Oregon, then it all emerges in springs around Clear Lake. The result is one of the most consistent rivers in the northwest.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, wherever in the world you might be.
