Autumn Bridge in the Rain

The Cresson covered bridge at Sawyer's Crossing, in southwestern New Hampshire. On a misty autumn day, just as the rain was starting up.

The bridge is 159 feet, 2.5 inches long, and 16 feet, 3.75 inches wide. It crosses the Ashuelot River a few miles south of Keene, NH.

Here's a little history: ‘The first bridge in this location was an uncovered crossing built prior to the Revolutionary War for 53 pounds, 6 shillings. In 1859 the first covered span was built to replace the original bridge at a cost of $1,735.94. As stated on the “New Hampshire Bridges” internet site: “The event was celebrated with a big dance held right on the bridge. Lanterns were hung from the rafters, a four piece orchestra played, lunch was served at midnight, and the dance continued all night.” In 1983 repairs were made to the bridge at a cost of $61,028.15. The town of Swanzey contributed $16,446.22, and the balance came from the state. A more recent report indicates that the bridge was completely restored in 1996 by Wright Construction Co., Inc., Mt. Holly, Vermont. The contractor’s documentation states the “project consisted of major truss component replacement, floor system replacement, and a new roofing system.” The report continues: “This wooden bridge was reconstructed to maintain the historical appearance and much of the historical joinery of the original construction, including turning our own wooden pegs on site.” Evans, Benjamin D.; Evans, June R. (2012-07-31).’ [from *New England’s Covered Bridges*, Evans and Evans (London, 2004)]
