Yosemite Backcountry Bonsai
This is Middle Chain Lake, at about 9,100 feet (2774 m) of elevation, in a corner of Yosemite that doesn't see a lot of visitors, as it's just so far off the beaten path. The highest point on the mountain ridge behind the lake is Gale Peak (10,685 feet – 3257 m), which marks the beginning of the Ansel Adams Wilderness. At this latitude, the lake sits near the top of the subalpine forest zone, characterized by large stands of Western White Pine, Lodgepole Pine, and Mountain Hemlock, which grow mostly as bonsai-esque krummholtz (like the one in the foreground here), the closer you get to the tree line and the beginning of the alpine zone.
Thanks very much for stopping by, and for all of the continued kind comments and favorites. I appreciate it.
