Bandiere di Siena

Flags of the seventeen contrade, or districts, of Siena, Italy, in the medieval city's central Piazza del Campo, where the world-famous Palio horse race between the competing contrade occurs twice each year, in July and August. And these flags and their matching livery are a central part of near-constant ritual display throughout the rest of the year, as well. There are many wonderful, medieval towns all across Europe. But no place gets into its traditions quite like Siena.
