Clouds Over Amboise
Standing on the aptly named Ile d'Or (Golden Island) in the middle of the River Loire, looking across at the town and chateau of Amboise, as dark clouds move in and threaten to steal away our blue skies.
Amboise is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department in central France. It lies on the banks of the Loire, 17 miles (27 km) east of Tours. Today a small market town, it was once home of the French royal court. Its former name was Ambacia, from the old name of the river and marsh Amasse.
The Château d'Amboise was built on a spur above the river in the 9th century. Confiscated by the monarchy in the 15th century, it became a favored royal residence and was extensively rebuilt. King Charles VIII died at the château in 1498 after hitting his head on a door lintel. The château was home to Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots, for much of her early life, being raised there at the French court of Henry II. She arrived in France from Scotland in 1548, aged six, via the French king's favourite palace at Saint Germain en Laye near Paris, and remained in France until 1561, when she returned to her homeland. And Leonardo da Vinci spent the last years of his life in Amboise, at the court of François I. (Wikipedia)
