Almost too close to photograph - Striated

This adult Striated heron was enjoying Nudgee Beach in Brisbane, Australia.

We had been out birding in the morning further north and stopped at this beach just to see what was going on. It turned out to be worth it as this heron let us spend the afternoon with him.

The Striated herons looks similar to a green herons but the striated has more of a grey or grey brown neck as opposed to the rofous or reddish necks of the greenies.

There is a slight overlap in these two birds range and hybrids can exist as a result which are intermediate between the two species, generally much more purple-red below than typical striated herons.

- Butorides striata.
