Camera craftsmanship

Two of the best late Victorian cameras that I have seen.

Left - J. H. Dallmeyer whole plate tailboard from c1890. Dallmeyer did not make their own cameras, they were made by the best makers of that date, this is probably by George Hare of London.

Right - Perken Son & Rayment 10x8 tailboard with tilt back.

Made in their factory, c1890 as a one-off possibly for exhibition display. Brazilian Rosewood ( Dalbergia nigra ) has been used which weighs 52 pounds per cubic foot, so this is a very heavy camera. The wood has a rose-like scent when freshly cut. The wood is also exceptionally hard, so pilot holes would have to be made before the brass screws were fitted otherwise thay would break-off when only partly into the wood.
