Cyanea crispa (syn. Rollandia crispa) in the strict sense (not including Rollandia crispa var. muricata). Hawai`i, O`ahu, Ko`olau Mts., area of Wailupe and Niu, gulch 1. Plant 1. Upper leaf surface.

Cyanea crispa (Gaudichaud) Lammers, Givnish and Sytsma in the strict sense (not including Rollandia crispa Gaudichaud var. muricata Rock)

Synonym: Rollandia crispa Gaudichaud

Hawaiian names: hāhā, `ōhā, `ōhā wai

Family: Campanulaceae (the bellflower family)

Habit: Plants with somewhat fleshy stems. Immature and young mature plants are often single stemmed. Older plants are usually branched at the base.

Native; endemic to the Ko`olau Mountains of O`ahu.

Habitat: gulch bottoms and lower gulch slopes in mesic-wet and wet forest.

Federally listed as endangered.

 

Cyanea crispa in the strict sense (not including Rollandia crispa var. muricata) and C. ‘muricata’ (Rollandia crispa var. muricata) appear to be separate taxa. They can be found growing together. I have not yet seen any plants that look intermediate between the two.
