2013_10_07 vigil_Elizabeth Chey (30)
On October 7, 2013 about 80 people joined in AFSC’s monthly vigil at the GEO run ICE immigration detention facility. Three families, each affected in different ways shared their sadness, frustration and gratitude with those gathered. Jeanette Vizguerra, having once been detained there, shared her gratitude for community support and diligence. Silvia, her son currently detained in the facility, shared her sadness at being brutally separated from him. And Genevieve, her step father currently detained there, for over 11 months, waiting to receive news regarding his U Visa application, shared her frustration at the lack of humanity in the prolonged wait. Those present included Regis University, University of Colorado at Denver and Metropolitan State University students, trying to make sense of our broken immigration system. They joined in as clergy, Rev. Anne Dunlap, led prayer with the community.
