Y7221 Sotteville 24 05 2011

SNCF Yoyo 7221 sits in the storage lines awaiting its modernisation.

SNCF approved the rebuild of 110 of these veteran Y100 and Y7400 locotracteurs as the Y9000 class for SNCF INFRA.

They were rebuilt between January 2012 and February 2015, initially by Socofer in partnership with Voith, then the last 90 by SNCF with kits supplied by Socofer.

After asbestos removal, they were all rebuilt as follows:

- a new cab layout;

- new engine (Man 6L D 2066 LE621); plus

New Voith components:

- drive axles;

- flexible couplings;

- cooling units; and

- transmission.

Y7221’s History:

Y7221 was built by Billard at their Tours Works and delivered to SNCF on 28/10/1960.

Ironically when Billard was going bankrupt in 1964, Socofor was set up to buy their rail division and Tours Works which they used until 2013.

Flagged for the Y9000 project, Y7221 was first sighted stored at the Sotteville Graveyard on 29/08/2010.

The last noted sighting was August 2012 and it probably went into Quatre-Mares Works soon after to wait its turn.

Renumbered to Y9077, it was released from modernisation on 10/02/2014.

It is still active in December 2025 with INFRA, (as are all the Y9000s).

Not bad for a 65 year old loco 😊
