37680 was built as D6924 by English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows and delivered to BR’s Landore Depot (87E) on 30/01/1964 (Works No.s E3410/D868).
Under TOPS in May 1974, it became 37224.
A Western Region Welsh freight loco for many years, its depot allocations were as follows after Landore:
January 1967: Cardiff Canton (86A)
June 1967: Back to Landore
January 1969: Back to Cardiff Canton
November 1970: Back to Landore
05/08/1979: Bristol Bath Road (BR)
03/10/1982: Back to Cardiff Canton
08/02/1987: Tinsley (TI)
Undergoing modifications at Crewe Works, it became Sub Class 37/6 No. 37680 on 27/04/1986 and back to Tinsley.
With Sectorisation, it started getting pools as well as depot changes:
30/09/1990: Immingham in Pool FABI - Railfreight Construction Immingham Locos
27/06/1993: FPYX - Tranload Petroleum Stored locos (stored Unserviceable which proved wrong).
25/07/1993: FQXA - Trainload Freight Headquarters - Immingham Class 37 (back in traffic after 1 month stored on 28/07/1993).
03/10/1993: FPRI - Trainload Freight - Immingham locos for Contract Services
20/03/1994: FDCI - Trainload Freight North - IM Class 37 (Humberside)
09/04/1995: FDDI - Loadhaul IM Class 37/47 (Doncaster Departmental)
24/09/1995: FDRI - Loadhaul - IM Class 37/47 (Restricted)
12/04/1996: Back to FDDI
27/09/1996: FDCI - Loadhaul - IM Class 37
26/09/1997: Toton in Pool ENTN - EWS - Toton Class 37 East & Midlands
27/11/1998: WKMS - EWS Toton Class 37 (Sandite)
11/12/1998: WKFN - EWS Toton Class 37/5 Systemwide
23/07/1999: WKBN - EWS Toton Class 37/0 - 37/3 and 37/5 (systemwide)
24/09/1999: Bescot to Pool WKMS - EWS Headquarters Class 37 (Sandite) for sandite season, then stored.
Final years details from Ian Furness’s WNXX info;
14/12/1999: WNXX - EWS - Locomotives for Storage after the sandite season at Stratford
12/07/2000: WNYX - EWS - Main Line locomotives for component recovery, but stayed at Stratford.
07/09/2000: Moved back to Toton on 15/08/2000. Then to pool WKMS for another sandite season after a bogie change.
Even though in the pool, it needed a lot of work and after a Toton B Exam, went to Wabtec at Doncaster on 06/10/2000.
After release from Wabtec on 17/10/2000, it went back to Toton for final tests and was released to sandite duties on 27/10/2000.
17/11/2000: WKSN - EWS Class 37 Toton Sandite
After the main sandite season finished and an A Exam at Warrington, 37680 was hauled to Wigan CRDC on 13/12/2000.
It then worked a few last sandite services off Wigan just before Christmas.
Assigned N ONE on 31/12/2000, 37680 was moved to Thornaby on 03/01/2001 and stored WNXX with 10,535 engine hours.
On 06/09/2001, 37680 was dragged to Crewe Diesel to donate its bogies to 37426.
It was then taken back to Thornaby on 15/10/2001.
Dumped in the Bull Ring scrap sidings, its only transfer for many years was on paper:
24/09/2003: Back to WKSN for sandite season.
25/09/2003: Back to WNXX (someone typed the wrong loco change into TOPS).
On 07/04/2005, 37680was put in the WNZX pool and offered for sale.
On 24/06/2005, it was confirmed as sold to HNRC (like 37672 parked near it).
HNRC left it stored at Thornaby and on 15/07/2006 there was a possibility that DRS may buy it (probably for parts). Nothing came of this.
Collected from Thornaby on 16/08/2006, 37680 didn’t go to Barrow hill. Instead, it went to the LaFarge Cement Works at Hope.
Its last pool change was 25/08/2006 to HNRS – Harry Needles stored loco pool.
It was restarted on 17/10/2006 for the first time in many years and things looked hopeful. It was a candidate for conversion to the 97/3 Cambrian Line ETRMS project.
Again, nothing came of this.
Instead on 25/04/2008 HNRC offered 37680 for sale to preservationists. And once again, nothing came of this.
In 2010, after stripping for parts, HNRC sold the hulk to TJ Thomson’s at Stockten.
It arrived there on 19/11/2010 and was scrapped a month later by Christmas eve 2010.
