Boeing 787-8 #3

Long Beach, CA

March 13, 2012

Boeing picked a bad weather week to bring the third prototype to So. CA. Weather reports indicate that it will be overcast in the morning, all week long. The planned takeoff date is Thurs., March 15. I can only hope for clearer skies. So, imagine this landing happening with blue skies and puffy clouds. Isn't it pretty?

With this view, you can plainly see the raked wingtips, used instead of winglets, and the chevron shaped engine nozzles, used to reduce the noise of the engine.

The first 4 aircraft are not destined for service, as the flight test program discovered changes that were needed for any production aircraft. Hopefully, they will all be used or saved in future years.

The purpose of the visit is ti visit the Boeing orphan, the McDonnel-Douglas plant at Long Beach. A long time competitor to Boeing, it will probably be closed with the end of the C-17 program.
