1945, Beijing, China --- Chiang Kai-Shek (1887-1975) led Chinese Nationalists against the Communist forces during the long struggle for power. After WWII his forces weakened and he was driven from the country in 1949. He served as president of Nationalist China from a base in Taiwan until his death. --- Image by © CORBIS
