In Memory of Smooshy
About three weeks ago my wife and daughter caught sight of a little creature on the road and being that both will never walk away from anyone or anything in need of help she had to turn around to see what kind of a creature was stuck in the middle of the road. She turned around and saw this little kitten stuck in the center of the middle of the three lanes of this very busy highway while cars passed over him. She thought the little kitten could not move because it was stuck in shock of the cars coming at him. So she stopped traffic and scooped the little guy off the road and put him into the car. She immediately took him to the vet and had him checked out with a full exam and x-rays. Sadly she was told that the little guy had a broken hip, a detached tail, and a completely broken right leg. She was told that there was no hope for the little guy and she should put him down. Being that she is a nurse and my daughter is a nursing student they could not do that. So they brought him back home and nursed and cleaned him for the next three days. The little guy definitely was making great recovery and was starting to play and even walk on three legs. We called him Smooshy since he almost got smooshed into the street. However, unfortunately the little guy could not urinate and so we took him back to the vet who basically drained his bladder with a needle and told my wife to put him down again. We were still not ready for that. As she always says that God gives the challenge to those who he thinks are best suited for it, she was chosen to care for this kitten. Unfortunately 2 weeks later, five different vets, and over one thousand dollars in vet bills, we were given no hope of saving the little sweet kitten we called Smooshy that came into our life. By then we had all fallen in love with the kitten. My daughter who had been cleaning and feeding him for most of the time, volunteered to hold him in a warm blanket as the vet put the little guy down. My daughter cried a river as she held him for the last time but could not send him to the back room to be put down alone on a steel medical table.
So for the next week every sighting of anything associated with Smooshy became an instant reminder of the little guy and caused my wife and daughter to cry time and again. While we have already saved three cats and definitely did not want another cat unless Smooshy was going to make it, I needed something to take their mind away from the little guy. So we went ahead and purchased another kitten that was the same breed and had the same exact markings so that we did not mess Smooshy so much. We were so happy to have had the opportunity to care for the little guy for the last two weeks of his life and gave him all the comfort and love that we possibly could. We would have loved to have him as part of our little cat family but unfortunately it was not meant to be. But we do have Bear, who is a brat, added to the family and hope he has a long happy life with us.
