The fall of the rebellious angels = Caida de los ángeles rebeldes

The Fall of Rebelious Angels, by Frans Floris (1554). Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp

Despite it being the origin of evil in the world, the fall of the rebellious angels and the fight between the good and the bad angels in celestial combat was not prevalent in artistic representation until the Renaissance. The challenge that the fall of the bodies into the abyss posed to artists who were trying out foreshortening perspective along with the restoration of the naked human figure and the desire to show splendid, muscular anatomies were positive factors in the success of this subject in the Renaissance epoch. As for Lucifer’s revolt, we can say that the most beautiful of the angels that were with God adoring him, feels superior to his Creator and decides not to honour him, but stages a rebellion in which he is accompanied by some of his companions.

The Flemish artist’s painting shows the battle that took place in the heavens between Saint Michael, the warrior angel faithful to God, and his fellows against the rebellious angels. In their rebellion these latter begin to show their perversion and the horror of their fall, disguising themselves as animals such as foxes, lions, snakes and even a fly perched on the gluteus of one of the devils.

As a curious anecdote, it must be pointed out that this painting was commissioned by a guild of blacksmiths and armourers so that the artist zealously reproduced the arms, foils, swords and cuirasses in honour of his patrons.
