The concept

This visualisation features all the international separation barriers, walls or fences, constructed to limit the movement of people across a certain line or border, or to separate two populations because of a political, social or economical conflict. The most prominent recent example was the Berlin Wall that separated the enclave of West Berlin from the rest of East Germany during most of the Cold War era.

20 years after, we commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall but sometimes we overlook the fact that “walls” still exist and ever grow rapidly around the globe. The idea of this project is to collect / index and visualise not only the current international separation barriers but also the barriers which are under construction as well the barriers which are proposed for construction.

The design

Each line represents the distance of 33km and each country is colour coded, numbered and applied an on amorphous shape. There are 3 combinations of colours which represent 3 categories of separation barriers - CURRENT, UNDER CONSTRUCTION, PROPOSED. You can visually compare the length (distance) of each country’s separation barrier and the same time the overall length (distance) and quantity of barriers for each category Ex. Current separation barriers. You can get more details about each country’s separation barrier though the index at the bottom of the poster.

he conclusion

After the completion of the design/visualisation, we notice that the overall distance of the under construction barriers is bigger that the overall distance of the current barriers. Wow! This was something unexpected but form follows data and the visual result is quite obvious, especially if you take into consideration the third category which are the barriers proposed to be built in the future.

The problem not only exists but “walls” are growing in our world.
