Suffolk, Bungay, Holy Trinity - great escape

Church of Holy Trinity - 15c nave, south aisle and south porch. The round tower, west and north walls are probably of saxon origin. The tower is topped with a 15c parapet with arms of Bigod, Montacute, Beauchamp, Brotheron and Despencer.

In the porch is a plaque stating 'Here was the fire stayed 1688' a reference to the terrible fire that destroyed much of Bungay. The fire got as far as the door leaving scorch marks but unlike St Marys nearby, it did not damage the interior .

The original chancel had become ruinous by 18c, the present chancel was built in 1926
