Yorkshire, Guisborough

The Augustinian Priory of St Mary was founded c1119 by Robert de Brus Lord of Skelton Castle and 1st Lord of Annandale, an ancestor of King Robert the Bruce . It was the earliest and most important Augustinian Priory and one of the richest monastic foundations in England with grants from the Crown as well as de Brus, supported by the local nobles and gentry.

Much destroyed by fire in 1289, it was rebuilt in gothic style on a grander scale in 14c.

Dissolved in 1540 the estates were acquired by fhe Chaloners who built the hall. The priory buildings were demolished and stone re-used

except for the east window which the Chaloners preserved as a romantic vista

Still owned by the Chaloners, it is now in the care of English Heritage

Archaeological excavations have been carried and the founders remains were found behind the high altar.
