Lincolnshire, Harpswell - Culloden clock

Church of St Chad , Harpswell Lincolnshire - The c1042 tower is one of the few remaining anglo saxon towers in England. - Clock - "I Thomas Whichcot esquire of Harpswell having now complyd with his Majesty's commands by devoutly and solemnly making my public acknowledgements to Almighty god for his goodness in protecting this kingdom in its religion, its laws and libertys, against all its open as well as private enemies, do in order to perpetuate ye memory of such great belssings, take this opportunity of presenting to you, William Dickenson, as ye representative for this parish of Harpswell, being their churchwarden, that clock which is just now fixt up in the steeple of your church, at my sole expence and charge, and I do desire and hope that you will take great care to preserve it, and not forget that it was placed here by me in order to remind ye present inhabitants of this your parish, and such as may dwell here after them as often as they hear this clock strike, that by ye assistance of Almighty God and the bravery of his Majesty's troops, which were

commanded, led up and animated by ye courageous example of his son, ye Duke of Cumberland, at ye battle fought near Culloden, upon ye 17th day of April 1746, a happy end was then put to a wicked and unnatural rebellion, which broke out ye last year in Scotland, in favour of a popish pretender, in witness whereof I do here deliver you this declaration, given under my hand and seal at ye said parish church of Harpswell, this 9th day of October in ye year of our Lord 1746 and in ye 20th year of ye reign of our sovereign Lord King George ll.....T Whichcot"
