Church of St John the Baptist Bettisfield Wales - built of Grinsall stone by Sir John Hanmer in 1873-4 and his wife Georgiana www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/7954415788/daughter of Sir George Chetwynd of Grendon, Warks. Designed by G E Street. Newly elevated to the peerage he bore the whole cost of the building and paid the stipend of the first curate Rev Joseph Dobel.
Bettisfield was originally in the parish of Hanmer, this parish church being an inconvenient distance away, in 1851 the Vicar and schoolmaster began to conduct Sunday evening services in the village shop here for the villagers These proved very popular and a wooden chapel was built opening on 12 October 1851 dedicated to St. Chad, and extended in 1852 and licensed by the Bishop who preached there
After the present church was built this wooden chapel was dismantled and parts of it re-erected at St Mary Magdalene, Tallarn Green in 1876 as a private room for visiting ministers. There is currently (in Dec 2011) a planning application before Wrexham CC to demolish this 'shed'.) (M Woodhall)
