Dartmouth Devon

c1490 Painted stone pulpit, some of its figures removed during the Reformation, others still survive -and replaced by the artist of King Charles ll with the Rose of England, Thistle of Scotland, Harp of Ireland etc & the king's initials probably after the kings visit of 1671 - slender octagonal panelled stem widens above like a palm to octagonal drum (with timber door) which has broad bands of foliage top, bottom and up the corners,

The 3 brasses on the floor are all of the 17c / 18c Holdsworth family

Rood screen: c1496 according to the church accounts. Very high quality carved oak. 11 bays across nave and aisles. The base of the screen is painted with figures of saints while the ornately carved tracery depicts grapes, wheat, and intertwined ropes, illustrating the maritime history of Dartmouth. Look amid the foliage for the face of a Green Man Stone stairs each end with round-headed doorways to the rood loft

it survived the Reformation. Instead of being destroyed it was dismantled and put into storage. It was only reinstalled in 1904

Some saints survive www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/zK07138AYs

Oldest and most interesting is a fragment of a slate slab near the pulpit engraved with the figure of a priest in eucharistic vestments.
