Chagford Devon

Looking east down the chancel, together with the church a 15c rebuild, in the Perpendicular style, of an earlier building dedicated by Bishop Branscombe of Exeter in 1261.

The early 15c east window has flamboyant stonework with flowing tracery. The stained glass showing 10 scenes from the life of Jesus, was painted in 1889 by Beer of Exeter and possibly designed by J. L. Pearson, who was responsible for much of the 19c design here.

The gilded reredos is also attributed to Pearson, a painted and gilded tryptych, shows ’Christ in Majesty’ flanked by panels of angels and saints. .

Covered by curtains, the wall behind was lined with highly coloured polychrome tiles of 1888

North of the altar is the ornate tomb of judge Sir John Whyddon of Whiddon who bought the manor in the reign of Queen Elizabeth l from the Copplestones
