Higher Ashton Devon

Looking west from the north aisle lady chapel once used for private worship by the Chudleigh lords of the manor in the 16c / 17c . There are rare painted scenes on the 15c screen dado & entrance door facing the altar instead of the congregation . They were painted in the 16c and include Annunciation & Visitation www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/e4at4H23Pr scenes together with portraits of the old prophets (or members of the Chudleigh family ?)

The scrolls are inscribed:

1. Maria virgo concipiet. (Mary will conceive as a virgin)

2. Et vocabitur Emanuell. (And he shall be called Emmanuel)

3. Surgite, Nolite, Timers. (Arise dont be afraid)

4. Lex per Moisen signata est. (The law was signed by Moses)

5. Et procete per Elyam. (And proceed through Elyam.)

6. Celi apti .... t su .... tjii.

7. Omnes resurgent in novissima tuba. (All will rise at the last trumpet.)
