Wales, Llanynys
Bishop Ap Richard 1238-1267 lived quietly here because he did not agree with the policies of Llywelyn the Great. After Llywelyn's death 1240 he supported his son Gruffydd in his conflict with his brother Dafydd for rule of Gwynedd. After Dafydds's death he took refuge in St Alban's Abbey in 1247 and in 1258 he sided with Llywelyn a son of Gruffydd acting as envoy for him in 1259 and 1260 though he clashed with him regarding his diocesan rights and Llywelyn's chapel was interdicted. Finally after the peace of Montgomery in 1267 Henry lll recognised LLywelyn as Prince of Wales, Richard begged the Pope to relieve him of his charge for increasing weakness, old age and the "malignancy" of his flock were burdens too heavy to bear. He is buried close to his tomb here.
