let they repent - Buckland Gloucestershire

Tombstone in the graveyard - "In memory of Thomas, son of Isaac and Mary Roberts of Laverton, who departed this life April 1750 aged 15 years. This youth was innocent at play and happened to be in affray with Richard Cull who with a knife soon put a period to his life. Cull's mother she was [standing by] encouraged this sad tragedy let they repent - blood guilt forsake lest vengeance should them overtake."

(Charles Isted of 181 Bynos Road, shoemaker, said he saw the deceased on Saturday afternoon in the Sanderstead road with Gilliam. Witness heard the latter ask the deceased for twopence. the deceased replied with an oath "I shan't give you twopence" and there upon Gilliam hit him with his clenched fist knocking his head against a wall and afterwards caught him by the collar and threw him into the road. His head knocked heavily on the ground. The man went away a few yards, but returned, picked up the deceased again by his collar and "banged" his head against the wall. They both appeared to be sober)
