West Markham / Clinton Markham Nottinghamshire
Late 12c, 13c & 15c Church of All Saints, West Markham / Markham Clinton Nottinghamshire flic.kr/p/RfHHRS
It consists of a nave, chancel, half timbered bell turret and 17c porch.
By the late 16c the church was in a poor state – the windows were damaged, the lead covering the bells was rolled up with the wind and the fence was broken. By 1620 it was described as ‘very ruinous’ and there were ongoing problems with the state of the chancel which was repaired in 1638 by 2 farmers of the parsonage. In the 1680s the churchwardens reported the absence of a poor man’s box, locks on the chest, a book of Homilies and that the chancel floor was unpaved and part of the church wall had fallen down.
In the 19c the patron, the Duke of Newcastle, at his own expense, built a replacement church, known as the Mausoleum for his family burials, and this became the parish church , leaving All Saints to fall again into disrepair, but thankfully it was not demolished as originally planned. A heavy storm also caused part of the sanctuary wall to fall down which was rebuilt in brick..
In 20c it had become impossible for the local community to maintain the two churches and in 1949 All Saints re-emerged as the parish church and has since been restored to its present good state
In the graveyard are 2 gravestone epitaphs worth noting: -
" Ye men that harpeth after wealth, As for my parts done myself
For to lay riches up in store, and labour'd hard for to gain more
When cruel death seized me so fast I thought I'd gain'd enough at last
As for my wealth I say therefore, my will was to be kind to the poor.
A whilst your poseing thus of me; think of the glass that runs for thee"
.
"With toylsom day and ancious night, to gain great wealth was my delight.
But death o'er took me and ye summon: gave and sent my body for to rest in grave.
Defer your judgement on what I have done for Judgement Day is comeing on.
To 14 Benefactors I have left my store and £20 unto West Markham poor".
