Alton Priors Wiltshire

12-15c & 18c Church of All Saints, Alton Priors, Wiltshire - Originally it was a chapelry of the church at West Overton. It stands beside a stream, opposite the church of St Mary's in the neighbouring parish of Alton Barnes, their congregations being briefly united in 17c but were separated in 1660 because the Rev. Wills curate of Alton Priors in 1656 was ejected. Once again from 1829-33 the 2 Altons were united when Augustus Hare, rector of Alton Barnes, unofficially served the chapelry.

14c Nave.. Late 15c - early 16c tower and chancel were refaced in brick in 18c

The Button family owned the manor 13c - 17c and there are 2 brass memorials to Agnes Button 1528 www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/8Y0wv1 and her son William Button 1590, the latter being very unusual www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/N95J5v .

The Buttons supported the crown during the Civil War, and Parliament seized some of their estates and imposed heavy fines on the family. Just before the Restoration they moved from Alton Priors in 1652 to Shaw-in-Alton.

The church is no longer in regular use since 1973, it has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 1977
