Yorkshire Catterick

Gauntlets detail - Sir Walter Urswick lies under a canopy with shields of Urswick impaling Scroop / Scrope of Masham.

Before he became the duke of Lancaster, John of Gaunt was the earl of Richmond from 1351. surrendering the title in June 1372 when he married his 2nd wife Constance of Castile and took the title king of Castile.

Gaunt was a rich man having married heiress Blanch of Lancaster, many joined his retinue of retainers including Walter who was paid £40 per annum +++.

Master of Game & Chief Forester to John of Gaunt in the new forest of Swaledale, and of Bowland charged from time to time with supplying game & wood..

(1374 - to deliver as much venison to the gentry of the neighbourhood as could be conveniently spared) and (to deliver 6 oaks fit for building. and in the year 1383)

He was also Constable of Richmond Castle in 1371 and a magistrate.

Interestingly Sir Walter's indenture has conditions only attached to peacetime service.

However despite not having agreed to serve in Gaunt’s retinue in times of war he fought Navarre and was knighted there on 3rd April 1366 . Froissart also mentions him with Gaunt in Bruges.

to come, and also to enable him the better to maintain the order of knighthood which he took of us on the day of the battle of Najara, we have given and granted to him for the term of his. life £40 a year, to be taken, year by year, in round sums, at the hands of our general Receiver for the time being out of the issues of our Manors of Catterick and Forcet, in our county of Richmond"’
