Somerset, Hinton St George church - refused - re-erected

Sir Amias Poulet c1533 -1588 - keeper of Mary Queen of Scots at Tutbury in April 1585 and later at Chartley and Fotheringay, until her death. A harsh gaoler, he was congratulated by Elizabeth on his vigilance, but to William Davison’s suggestion that he should connive at Mary’s murder, Paulet replied:

My goods and my life are at her Majesty’s disposition, but God forbid I should make so foul a shipwreck of my conscience, or leave so great a blot on my poor posterity.

He was rewarded after Mary’s execution with the chancellorship of the Garter.5

Effigy in alabaster with french inscription, "once in St Martins Church Westminster which being pulled down and being refused to place the monument in the new church there, was removed with the body to this place in respect of the memory of Sir Amias Poulett by the 1st Earl Poulett knight companion of the most Noble Order of the Garter AD 1729"
