Church of St Mary & St Lambert, Stonham Aspal -= Stone homestead is mentioned as "Estuna" in 1086 Domesday when there was a church here for 2 villagers, 4 small holders and 11 free men. In 1066 the lord was Aelmer. In 1086 ,Miles de Belefol

The present church dates from early 14c and there is a c1330 knight of the Aspal family who may have been its founder www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/13930045967/

In 15c parapets were added to the nave roof and the north aisle was remodelled. The 14c tower is topped by a 1742 belfry built by Theodore Eccleston of Crowfield Hall (the old home of the Wingfields) who had 5 old bells melted down and recast as ten bells.
