Norfolk, Heacham - Matoaka Rebecka Pocahontas

"Princess Matoaka Rebecka Pocahontas daughter of Powhatan hereditary overking of the Alconquin Indians of Virginia

Born 1525, baptised 1613, died 1617 Her romantic marriage in 1614 to John Rolfe officiated by Richard Bucke www.flickr.com/gp/52219527@N00/eFy5n7 brought peace to the settlement.

To mark a picturesque episode in the history of 2 nations this memorial was set up by friends in England and America 1933 "

Little is known of their early married life in Jamestown. Their son Thomas was born in Virginia in 1615. They undoubtedly came to Heacham where John's mother Dorothy www.flickr.com/photos/52219527@N00/12203564183/ was living and legend has it that John and Pocahontas planed a mulberry tree in the garden of Heacham Hall. Pocahontas died at Gravesend and was buried there in St George's Church. The church was destroyed by fire and her grave has never been discovered
