He m Thomasine daughter of John Coppinger 1540 Lieutenant of the Tower, Master of the Mint, Groom of the Robes, and Senior Gentleman Usher to Hen. VIll, by Jane heiress daughter of William Bond, of London, Clerk of the Green Cloth to Henry Vlll by Anna Alphage

1. Henry +++ his heir who erected the monument m 1586 Dorcas daughter of Sir John Rivers, citizen and alderman of London
2.Elizabeth 1614 m Robert Sheppard 1614 of Tenterden & Merwood Kent (Parents of Major Robert Sheppard 1605-1653 died in Jamestown, James City County, Virginia ; Martin 1607-1608 & Thomasina 1610-1611
Martin James was Remembrancer of the court of exchequer, Registrar of the Court of Chancery., notary and administrator
He was owner of Northcourt, an ancient seat in the Parish of Smarden
In 1575 he (or his father) acquired Romenden / Romsden / Romden Place in the eastern part of this parish from Sir Roger Manwood, who entertained Queen Elizabeth on her progress that same year. It was later settled by him along with other properties on his heir Henry +++ in 1586
Son Henry and wife had 3 sons & 2 daughters and about 15 years after their marriage his prosperity was crowned by a knighthood. Then adversity came upon him . Sometime between 1599 , when he gave 26s . 8d . to the new bells for Smarden Church , and 7th October, 1603 when he and his wife were " presented " for absenting themselves from church for 6 weeks or thereabouts " he either resumed or adopted the old Catholic religion. By 1610 he had been adjudged a Popish recusant , and as such , two-thirds of all his lands, leases and farms were liable to be seized by the Crown. To impose this harsh penalty the Kent Commissioners held an inquiry into his affairs at Rochester Castle on 6th March , 1612 when all his property was disclosed . In the meantime Sir Henry and his family had left Romden, and on the following June an inventory and valuation of the contents of the deserted house was made.
From 1610-1654 the James family continued to be recusants , (their descendants being persecuted and impoverished) .
However under the Act of 1653 all their estates in Kent were discharged from sequestration
In 1650 Henry's grandson Walter James inherited Romden; and when he , or a son of the same name died in 1664 his sole heiress was Auriah / Aurea / Auria James 1655-1695 who m aged 14, John Otway, gent, of Mitcham, Surrey .(She died aged 40, having had 20 children of whom only 7 sons survived).
