Modeling historical, predicted fires

Fires predicted by the Roos-Swetnam model (orange line) are presented alongside historical fires (the black line) from fire scars dated from 1700 to 2000. As shown, the model accurately predicted historical fires, and also indicates that low-intensity surface fires should have occurred throughout the last century, were it not for fire suppression. An unprecedented study combining hundreds of years of tree ring and fire scar data from the southwest United States suggests todays mega forest fires are truly unusual, says Christopher I. Roos, fire anthropologist at Southern Methodist University, Dallas.
