Caput mortuum (death’s head)

Artists made use of Egyptian mummies; the brownish paint known as Caput mortuum (Latin for death’s head) was originally made from the wrappings of mummies. It was most popular in the 17th century but was discontinued in the early 19th century when its composition became generally known to artists.
