KCS 4869 Southbound GKCSJI-17 South of Heavener OK

Corey Root and I planned a trip long ago for April 2021. Due to weather, the trip to the PRB was cancelled, and a trip to the KCS was planned since sunnier days looked better there. With the current CP-CN bidding war for the KCS, the time might be now to get more KCS anyway. What a great trip we had doing some stuff that I haven't ever done and seen. Weather was good enough, and the train traffic was decent.

The KCS south of Heavener on the Shreveport Sub is some cool railroading!! The railroad makes the 45-mile climb over the Ouachita Mountains along the Oklahoma/Arkansas border. Here, a 98-car loaded grain train bound for San Juan Del Rio, MX, crosses the Shawnee Creek with good speed....well for now. These 4 units (2x2 DP) will get a good workout as the machine vs. gravity battle is just getting serious. In the next 20 miles, the train will go from 538 feet to the summit at Rich Mountain at 1621 feet. Beautiful scenery, rugged railroading, and a good-looking paint scheme...the KCS!

KCS was merged into the CPKC on April 14, 2023.
