Shadow Self Portrait _ 04241401

Available – In June 2017, I found this self portrait I painted in April of 2014 and thought I would share it. Self portraits by nature, in the purest and most valued sense, are unflinchingly honest. If they hit the mark they give the viewer a glimpse of the artist’s unvarnished self analysis and expression. In the sense of honesty, the artist must knowingly and scrupulously be completely honest, exposing all, telling all, naked, afraid and including their deepest shames. We all have judgments, probably the most critical of which are ones of self. We all contain a shadow self, but few venture to explore, or indeed expose to others or the world at large. This shadow self is part of us, the core of light which we all contain as well could not exist without the shadow mirror. It can be helpful if we befriend this shadow, letting it guide and teach us. At that moment in 2014, just after my birthday, I painted this seeking expression and visual representation of an aspect of that deep part of me. We would all be wise to love, cherish and embrace ALL aspects of our complex and simple selves, light, dark and indifferent aspects included. The reason being is that people’s parts cannot be separated from the whole, and indeed the whole is richer for all its combined nature and the choices we are free to make.
