Uzabus 590 in Foxton 1/7/2016

The Palmerston North based 2004 MAN 12.223 with Designline B44F bodywork snapped at 2.17pm checking out from the Foxton Main St. stop after arriving back in Foxton on the return loop service from Levin on its first day of operation by Uzabus on Friday, 1 July 2016 of the Friday 'Day Out In Town' community bus service that has setdowns in Shannon, Foxton, Foxton Beach and Waitarere Beach.

The bus has taken over the the service that was pioneered by George Tukapua's Tukapua Tours 1982 Hino BG100 (ex New Zealand Road Services) bus in 2013 which started with a free 3 month trial service to gauge ridership that year.

The Tukapua Tours coach made its last service run on this Friday service on 24 June 2016.

It now appears that the ageing Tukapua Tours coach was axed from the service not entirely because of its age (1982) but more to do with the dissolving of the contract with the Te Horowhenua Trust by the Horowhenua District Council (as from 1 July 2016) that had been responsible for funding the service.

Horowhenua District Council Chief Executive David Clapperton said the final decision not to renew Te Horowhenua Trust's contract was an operational decision and followed a comprehensive review of community services - not only library and community services, but also Council's aquatic services, community service centres, and community development including grants, events and recreation. It involved a series of focus group discussions, as well as interviews with individual users.

"The Trust has done a great job and we certainly appreciate their responsibility and effectiveness in managing the library and community services. However, there is still a need to create more sustainable and cost-effective services that the community can afford,"

"Bringing the library and community services in-house will allow for improved service coordination, integration and delivery, as well as expanding reach and range of programmes," Mr Clapperton said.

Horowhenua's popular Day Out in Town Bus now begins its loop of the district earlier in the day each Friday.

From Friday, July 1, the bus' scheduled stops have been brought forward by 15 minutes, now departing from Te Takere in Levin at 9.15am.

The bus will continue to travel via Shannon, Foxton Beach, Foxton and Waitarere Beach, before arriving back in Levin at 10.45am. It will then depart from Te Takere for the return loop at 1.45pm.

The fare remains at $2 per passenger, providing affordable and reliable travel between the Horowhenua communities.

The service does not operate on public holidays.

The Day Out in Town Bus service is now operated by Horizons Regional Council.

Since 2014 it had been operated through Te Horowhenua Trust (now dissovled), funded by third party sources including New Zealand Lotteries, Infinity Foundation and Pub Charity.
