King Rail
a secretive bird that is more often heard than seen. So secretive that I didn't believe it was a King Rail, because why so public? I was convinced it was the more common Clapper Rail, and had it checked for the correct ID before posting. We saw a pair and their young chick walking around a refuge road at Pungo unit of the Pocosin lakes National Wildlife Refuge.Habitat loss has put the King Rail in serious decline, and it is rarely seen any place but in our larger east coast refuges. The species is categorized as near threatened
